Blade repair technicians
Wind energy's growth has created demand for a specific, specialist skillset: technicians who can repair a rotor blade at height, on rope, often a long way from anywhere convenient.
A blade repair technician is responsible for executing repairs of varying complexity on wind turbine rotor blades, typically using rope access techniques or a working platform to reach the blade itself. The blades are composite structures — fibreglass, a foam or balsa core, resin — built to be strong and flexible at once. That same construction makes them vulnerable to erosion and lightning strikes, and when damage happens, it needs a technician who understands both the material and the access method.
The role is genuinely multi-disciplinary: training in industrial rope access methodology, proper shutdown and isolation procedures for wind energy converters, familiarity with different manufacturer specifications, and the practical skill of inspecting, testing and repairing coatings and fibres in conditions that aren't always forgiving.
The UK and European repair season typically runs from April to October, dictated by what the materials themselves can tolerate. It's demanding work — physically and psychologically — carried out in remote, high-risk environments, often with real time away from home during the season.
